Is now a good time to talk? Maintaining an Open Door Environment in the Workplace

An open door environment is more than a definition or policy outlined in an employee handbook.  It speaks to a culture that encourages all employees to approach members of management with questions or concerns, as well as suggestions or feedback.  An open door environment fosters transparency in the workplace and free flowing communication between employees and management.  Some of the benefits that come from having an open door environment are:

  • Managers maintain an overall pulse on how their employees are feeling and how things are going.
  • Deeper working relationships between managers and employees.
  • Open flow of communication, both bottom-up and top-down, leading to a positive impact on employee performance and productivity.
  • The next best idea, suggestion or innovation likely comes from an unplanned conversation.

All that said, it takes work to create and maintain an open door environment.  There should be some defined guidelines and generally accepted parameters to help support productivity and confidentiality, while maintaining the benefits above.  For example, an open door policy does not mean that an employee can barge into a manager’s office or conversation whenever they please.  Additionally, managers need to develop a method for respectfully blocking out distractions for periods of the day or week to ensure that they can complete their personal work as well.

Lastly, in order to maintain an open door environment, managers must fully support and live up to the expectations that come with it.  They need to be available for their employees, listen deeply, and most importantly act or follow through.  The best open door environments make employee feedback, questions and suggestions a casual, every day part of the workplace. When true transparency and free flowing communication between employees and managers exist, amazing things will happen!
