Top 5 Interview Questions Every Employer Should Ask

Open ended questions should be the main focus of the interview, because simple yes-or-no answers rarely give the insight for which an experienced interviewer should be looking. Here are five recommended open ended questions that every employer should ask:

 

  1. Why do you get out of bed in the morning?
    • Asking this general question will give the candidate an opportunity to share what his or her deep motivations are and these can be easily related to your company’s mission and goals.
  2. Can you give me an example of a time where you were asked to compromise safety, quality, or business ethics for the sake of production or profit?
    • This question can give insight on what the candidate considers ethical and unethical behavior, as well as a candidate’s ability to balance competing priorities or demands. Top candidates will likely give specific examples and include details on how and why they addressed the situation with bosses or coworkers.
  3. Could you tell me about a time where you were given direct feedback and how you handled it?
    • Past experiences are normally great indicators of how a candidate will act in the future. If the candidate comes across as a victim or indicates that he or she was not in the wrong at all, it can be a red flag.
  4. What type of work environment do you thrive in?
    • This question is a great way to see if the candidate’s work style will fit with the future environment and will yield insight on his or her work style, habits, and productivity.
  5. Can you tell me about your least favorite manager and how they earned that spot?
    • This question will shed light on the candidate’s preferred management style and how he or she has handled challenges with a prior manager. Additionally, this question often leads candidates to provide “too much information” that may prove to be very insightful from a potential employer’s perspective!
