Stand up and stretch!

Sitting at a desk all day takes a serious toll on a person’s posture. We have all seen people with shoulders rounding forward and a curved upper spine. It is as if they are folding in on themselves. All the hours sitting at a desk, combined with commuting and the other typical daily chores all add up to poor posture – placing significant stress on the neck, shoulders and back.

To alleviate this stress, the trainers at Body Within, Inc. recommend a simple stretch that can be done throughout the work day. Find a doorframe. Align your body parallel to the doorframe and rest an upright arm against the frame. Step through the door and allow your arm to be gently pulled back. This stretch will open up the chest, lengthen the front of the shoulders and pull your back into proper alignment. Repeat with the other side of your body. Be sure to hold the stretch for at least ten seconds on each side and to make sure you are breathing while stretching.
